About Ken

I was born and raised in Frederick County, Maryland and I have lived in the area most of my life. My father was the Vice President of a large construction company and although I was never employed by that company or any construction company, I learned most of the trade firsthand from my father. His “hobby” was remodeling and our house was reconstructed from the ground up. I learned some electrical, plumbing, drywall and various other trades. I found out at a very young age the meaning of hard work and dedication to a job. My father was a perfectionist and the end result of any project was excellence.

Shortly after reaching my teenage years in the early 1980’s, I joined the Navy and was Aircrewman of a Helicopter Squadron. My home base was Norfolk, Virginia but I served many months at sea. It was an exciting time and the travel was great but after my first term I decided it was not a career for me.

After the Navy I worked several different jobs. One day a friend asked me to help out with a carpet installation job. I did so well that they hired me – that was the beginning of it all. I learned all of the aspects of the trade from installation, to custom fabrication, to sales. Years later when the company changed owners I was promoted to General Manager and worked in that position for seventeen years. It was a great job – one that I thought I would be in until retirement. The culture of the Company changed however, and I no longer looked forward to going to work each day. I got restless and I realized that I would not be promoted any further – my next step in the company would be as an owner and that would never happen. I decided that I wanted more. I wanted to control my own destiny and see what it was like to have my own business. So, in December 2013, New Market Carpets, LLC was in operation.
